Kate Ghotti is one of the most successful TV personalities in the UK, apparently living a perfect life of wealth, success and popularity. So when she learns that an exposé article is about to be published which could destroy her career, friendships, freedom and life, she’ll stop at nothing to prevent it. As she sets out on an odyssey across London three nights before Christmas, will she manage to come out on top without sacrificing her dignity, sanity or soul?
Christmas Is Cancelled is an exciting new play from the mind of writer/actress Tuula Costelloe, who reached the top 1% of the shortlist of this year’s BBC Writers Room Open Call, and was one of the leading writers in the Edinburgh TV Festival/All 3 Media New Drama Collective’s 2023. Christmas Is Cancelled, in which she appears as Kate, marks her playwriting debut.
The play is directed by Hector Smith, who completed his MA Text & Performance at RADA and who has previously directed at the Phoenix Theatre Melbourne (Australia), House of International Theatre Copenhagen and the Cockpit Theatre London. The cast is completed by Graeme Culliton (Arthur), Lara De Belder (Aisha), Rosa French (Jane), Megan Sangster (Hana) and Anas Zabadne(Niall).
A thought-provoking reflection on today’s culture, Christmas Is Cancelled takes audiences on a riveting journey as Kate’s life of decadence turns to desperation. They will have to decide where their own loyalties lie, as she resorts to risky remedies of damage limitation, which in turn expose her to dangers of a different kind – and just to add to that intrigue, performances on Mondays and Saturdays will have different endings to those on other days! All round, Christmas Is Cancelled is a timely and thrilling antidote to December’s overload of seasonal sentimentality.
