"We are many Severinos. The same life and the same fate: To break these stones, sweating over them, the fate of trying to wake this arid land, trying to pull a harvest... out of ash." This Severino, however, decides to leave the barren hills of his country, Ashmire. In his path, death comes in many forms: Sharpshooters, Alchemists, Landowners, but he won't stop until he finds a better life on the violent cliffs of Brynemere.
Double Jinx's "Death and Life in Ashmire" is a fantasy adaptation of the epic Brazilian poem "Death and Life of Severino", starring Jonathan Cuenot & Yuri Furtado.
This physical theatre show offers a mime-fuelled nosedive into the fantasy world of Tephra: the post-medieval realm in which all of Double Jinx's work is set. A planet of sword-swinging, gunslinging and alchemy brewing warfare.
This is a work-in-progress showing, offering a silly-serious story about Death, more specifically the amount of Death necessary to get a migrant to the place they want to be.
Every travelling Severino walks through the valley of the shadow of Death, stepping over the bones of past Severinos. All migrants, be they from Earth or from Tephra, have to cross a long bridge made up of their ancestor's remains in order to reach their destination - Life. A decent Life.
And when we finally die, all migrants know that our bones will become the bridge that future Severinos cross to get even further - Even further because they won't settle for decent. They'll want good Lives.
And so the cycle of Death & Life continues, slowly but surely, wave after wave of immigration, we guarantee better Lives for our newborn Severinos.
