Make Way for Rose

Come all and meet the ‘vase girl’ May Kway, the enigmatic freakshow cabaret star of Chinese origin! Join her on a journey through feminist awakening, queerness, and ghost stories, accompanied by MC Rosie and their unconcerned assistant. With a mix of lip-synching, stand-up comedy-style monologues, shadow theatre, and grotesque eating, MAKE WAY FOR ROSE explores the agency of the marginalised performer under the male, Orientalist, and ableist gaze. Will May Kway manage to break free from the script?

Originally devised as part of the Goldsmiths MA Performance Making degree shows 2023, the piece has been further developed in festivals and exhibitions, including ‘Violent Divinity’ at Luckypot, Peckham Fringe Hatch & Scratch 2024, and the Soho Theatre Drag & Cabaret Lab 2024.
