'Trauma' by Mehrnoosh Khorsand

'After the fall of the Pahlavi dynasty in Iran in 1979 a new age of totalitarianism and religious authoritarianism gripped that ancient land. On 13th Sept 2022 Mahsa Amini was arrested in Tehran by Iran's so-called Morality Police - who routinely subject women and girls to arbitrary arrest, detention, torture and other ill-treatment for not complying with the regime's discriminatory veiling laws. Mahsa was violently beaten while being forcibly transferred to Vozara detention centre. Within hours she was transferred to Kasra Hospital having fallen into a coma. She died three days later. In the ensuing protests over 500 people were killed by police, including women and at least 68 children. 'Trauma' by Mehrnoosh Khorsand is set against this backdrop of gross human rights' abuses and judicial killings by the Tehran regime. Leila, a young refugee from Iran is in a London hospital - traumatised and hallucinating. Separated from her young daughter Leila's trauma is manifested through a disconnect between her reality as a patient under observation in a mental health ward and past events in Iran. She struggles to tell the difference between her hallucinations and reality, unsure if she'll find her young daughter. She's unsure too if she can trust anyone or if she can finally break free of the bonds of a grotesque oppression.'
